Xenophobia and the EA federation

The Oxford dictionary defines the term xenophobia as "hatred or fear of foreigners."

There is a new wave of xenophobia that is slowly creeping into the East African region that if not nipped in the bud, could undermine the ongoing efforts at political federation, the much cherished goal of our region.

The timing of this xenophobia is unfortunate. It has come at a time when the leaders of East Africa have just launched the fast-tracking of the political federation. What is worrying is that at the official level, not much has come out by way of condemnation of these regrettable acts.

Xenophobia should not just be viewed as a dislike or fear of foreigners. It is a form of violence. People get killed and property destroyed. In recent months, thousands of Rwandans have been expelled from Tanzania where, as minorities, they have lived in harmony with locals since the 1930s.

This is a time long enough for any foreigner to be accepted as a bona-fide resident. The fact, however, is that the Rwandans returned home under harrowing conditions and dirt poor. Stories abound of their mistreatment and loss of property.

A Tanzanian friend recently confessed that he could not understand why his countrymen were rushing into a political union, when Tanzanians cannot even resolve their Union problems with Zanzibar.

Unfortunately, he concluded that "it is premature to have political integration among the East African countries."

This contradicts the mood of euphoria among the political elite, who seem to think that the process of political federation is unstoppable.

A Tanzanian website, www.habarizatanzania.com , is getting xenophobic in its postings on issues of foreigners in Tanzania. Its message is that Tanzania is for Tanganyikans only.

President Jakaya Kikwete seems to have discovered early on that some of his people are not so convinced about the political federation project when he recently remarked that "Tanzanians have no reason to fear because the current political environment in the world and especially in East Africa is different from that which prevailed when the East African community collapsed in 1977."

At a time when the political federation is entering a crucial stage, efforts must be marshalled to neutralise those with xenophobic tendencies in the region.

No wonder why you are in Kigali. You are not even yet a member of EAC and you are making a lot of noise. Grow up and learn to debate things maturely because at the present moment you are just angry because your fellow countrymen have been removed from TZ. For how long did you think that TZ is your backyard for all your problems? and not so all people within EAC who did not contribute to freedom in Southern African countries think Tanzanians are stupid. you come to our country and you think now you have the right to do whatsoever you wish. No federation with killers.

Each country is simply looking at benefits to be obtained from the proposed EA federation. if Tanzanians does not see any, why force? Our refusal is now called xenophobia. Whwn they start slaughtering each other and Tanzania as usual assists regardless of economic consequences, that is not xenophobia. Kindly leave us in peace

    Oscar,
Let me tell you this,Tanzania will continue to accomodate people from neighbouring countries as long as they respect the laws of Tanzania!.We cannot
continue to do this any more as long as you people of Rwanda and Burundi fail to respect human rights, rule of law, democracy and fight against tribalism in your countries. You people of Rwanda have been promoting tribalism in your country..causing all this chaos of refugee inflow in our country!..and you sit there and say nothing about tribalism in your country! and blame Tanzania for returning Rwandese home?..and said they came there in 1920..where in Rwanda or Tanzania?..are u serious? why we don hear people goin to Rwanda to seek refuge. The answer is clear there is no peace in Rwanda!..Stop promoting tutsi vs hutus! it wont help ma brother!..actually it will cause Rwandese to alway run away from their country to seek refuge in Tanzania,Congo, and other country!...
We Tanzanians have the right to protect our border and promote peace and security in our country..so if any refuge is not respecting our laws got to leave the country immediately!
Dont you see wat problems the refugee have cause to the people of Ngara,Bukoba and Kigoma?..wake up!! and fight against tribalism in your country!and probably in the future will come and stay in peaceful Rwanda!.

Our neighbours should respect our country Tanzania for being what it is. They should also remember that we are already a united country, for more than 4 decades. We can now proud ourselves of having built a country desired by everybody around, which is the main reason behind this dream of federation with us. Had it been Tanzania is like Somalia for the last decade, or for that matter like Rwanda in 1990'3, Northern Uganda for so many years now or Kenya with it's tribalism, nobody world have engaged Tanzanians in such a talk. Our country is wondeful, big, the economy is booming, there is peace everywhere except in the border areas, we respect each other, we are now mining every kind of stone is the world, the world now is aware that Kenyans were lying about Mt. Kilimanjaro, our leaders are respected in the world and are given priviledges and responsibilities that others can only dream, we have land, we have nice people, our brothers in the southern Africa appreciate what we did for them as human while others were like monsters to them including our very neighbours, the list goes on and on. You have to do your homework first. When we were buidling our country, some were killing each other and others were lamenting stupid words at us while falling in love with tribalism. We even helped some folks to unite with us in 1967 and ten years later, they broke everything and called us a lot of names, chanting as if they were winners. Now they know that they were cursed and not blessed. If a Tanzania don't like this thing, do not harrass him, because he or she contributed to what you call today xenophobia Tanzania. If we are xenophobic, then leave us alone. We are proud of our nation my friends. We know about unity than any other noise maker in Africa, and even our national anthem proves that. When did you guys know better than us about unity? Listen you can go to &%#@!. Tanzania is a land of opportunity and so will remain!!!Live long Tanzania, my mother land.

    Oscar,
Im very disappointed with the kind of hatred you have on Tanzania.Tanzania as the country has the right to decide who should live within its borders and who should not.We have seen many people especially from Rwanda,Burundi and Kenya want to come to Tanzania and take our land and enjoy the peace of our country. How many Tanzanians do you think want to go to Rwanda to live?..the place where tribalism is at the peak of everything.Look for example at your government, army, etc who is making the top..its the tutsi!..so Oscar before you blame the Tanzania for returning the Rwandese home..think about who would like to live in your country first, solve your home problems first before you start to blame other countries!.
Yes Tanzanians have to worry!..look at Kenya for example the issue of waluo vs wakikuyu! or in Uganda the issue of wanyankole..come on!..solve your home problem first before u blame Tanzania..
Until u have stable and peaceful Rwanda with no tribalism!then you come EAF.
Tanzania people like to live in peace and harmony but not in tribalistic country...thats why we are following this movement very cautiously! who do you think for example wants political federation with somalia?..u know the answer! so please shut up and build your country with equal opportunity for all and not tutsi only or hutus only.
    Mwananchi.

Tell Tanzanian brothers that their cheap, bigoted ethnocentric ways belong to the time long gone by. Wake up guys and have a life. Who doesnt know Tanzania is a playing field of white gold diggers eager to exploit your nonrenewable resources without investing in the real productive sectors of the economy. The recent boast in your economy is from foreign investment in natural resource exloitation. Anyway i dont expect Tanzanians to have a clue on the issues global political economy that require higher level reasoning. They can continue with their emotional appealing rhetoric which has no real substance.

Call it whatever you choose to .We are proud of what we are.Our dear country has vast experience on these topics you dare mentioning.
We were member of the first EAC and as you know our union (Tanganyika and Zanzibar) has lasted some few decades now .
We feel we have right to cry foul when we see one .The first EAC collapsed .Our neighbours were fully responsible for that.
All the major EAC economic infrastructures were invested in their country The rest of the countries were used merely for raw material production. They cowardly bow to the pressure of the west and broke it.
That will never happen again, we are ready to pounce and make the life of our people better. We wlii deal with EAC on our own terms ,whoever want to join it Good luck

Tanzania will always be united and peaceful. Countries like Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia should follow what their Tanzanian brothers have done. The East African Community should have its advantages, and eventually it will include Rwanda, Burundi. Having this federation, will strenghthen East Africa as a whole. Tanzania has always helped other countries in turmoil. People should know that PEACE is easy to achieve.

Mr Kimanuka is very xenophobic and must have problem with his numbers! What was your sample size? What generalisation!
I am a tanzanian and I would seriously like to see the community enlarged and prosper, by the way, I believe that I subscribe to majority view point.

It seems like many of you are quite xenophobic and do not understand the core problems of the situation. Yes I understand that there are some reasons why Tanzania should be skeptical about joining the EAC but it all has to be put in context. And sorry to burst alot of your bubbles, Rwanda and Burundi are part of the EAC.
